How are you passing your summer vacation? Look at what the staff at Pure are doing! They have been playing with fascinating insects found around the natural surroundings of Pure.
The insects are called Kabutomushi - Japanese Rhinoceros or Horned Beetle. Staff are dividing them into males and females before they put them into the new homes they have made for them. The new homes are similar to fish tanks, but they are filled with soil, sawdust and small branches.
How do they tell which are male and which are female? Do they ask the beetles? No, apparently the male beetles are the ones with the large horn.
Using small logs staff have created feeding tables for the beetles. When there is insect jelly on the tables the beetles are quick to crowd around – they must like the taste!
Hmmmm, I wonder what a beetle tastes like?! – Just kidding!
So, next time you are at Pure check out the new display – two tanks with Kabutomushi!
At Pure you can even buy small beetle homes and other items and then go out and find your own beetles!
